Tuesdays thoughts

Hi , every one I hope you are all well and have had a good day ,I have, though not sure doing what ! Have you noticed with  house work ,you only see it when it needs doing ,no one see's what you've done ,when its done ,am I making sense ?

I think I baffled alot of our American friends, when I told you last evening we were having Toad in the Hole for dinner !

there you are can you see it ? it is sausages cooked in a batter ,I cook my sausage in a dish similar to this one on moderate heat in some oil ,when they are cooked abit ! I,turn up the oven to hot ,(pour off some of the fat as the sausage usually make more)and pour over the batter mix ,I like to hear the sort if fizz sound as the batter hits the fat ? The batter mix is a couple of tablespoons of plain flour an egg ,enough milk to make a thick cream substance ,then a splash of water ,(its the addition of the water that makes it rise ,the oil and water theory)I know what I mean, I hope you are following me ,Delia, I am not ! You beat the batter to get the air into the mix,my dear Mother in law ,(who made Yorkshire pudding to die for) used to say, beat it till it trots ,making a noise like a horse trotting ,Yorkshire pudding is minus the sausage and eaten with roast beef ,Sorry I cant be more precise I dont measure ,I can tell by looking if its right , as all the cooks amongst us will understand....

I came out of the cul-de-sac where we live and on to the road, that I take to go to the shop at the end ,to get my paper this afternoon ,I noticed the curtains were closed in many of the houses I passed by ,I then saw two men out side a house ,in dark suits and wearingwhit shirts with  ties ,so I guessed  there was to be a funeral ,of someone in the street ,and that was why the curtains were closed ,I was pleased to see this old fashioned tribute to a deceased neighbour ,was still observed ,its nice to know some traditions are still being kept .

Well since Maurice is working tonight I am now ,going to make my self something to eat, then curl up with my knitting and the tele .Have a lovely restful night every one

Janxx

When I said I loved toad in the hole, I meant I love to buy it ready-made and stick it in the oven.  I will try however, to get hubby to make it using your recipe!
Haven't seen curtains closed for a funeral for a long time.  My family do it though...they're sticklers for tradition.
Hugs,
A xxx

Hi Jan!  Your Toad in the Hole looks delish!  I'll have to try it sometime. I know just what you mean about house cleaning. It seems like all I do these days, besides crochet, knit, and cook. =)
Have a wonderful day!

I never weigh or measure things when I cook anything, I always go by how it looks, your explanation of how to do toad in the hole sounds fine to me but then again I know what your talking about,

Food looks great!
Closing curtains, how nice., lovely way to show respect...I'd not heard of it before. I recall when I worked at the hosp & nrsg home, would close all the doors to the rooms just before they came to pick up a deceased person until after they had left.

Jan, thanks for the clarification. We make yorkshire pudding every time we have roasted beef. Maybe we will try to make some Toads in the hole soon. I like sausages. Sometimes Libby will fry them up and then wrap a Pillsbury's crestant roll around each one and bake it until the roll is all crisp around it. GAD! To much talk about food, Now I'm hungry. My Regards, Bill.

Hi Jan...

yum! Toad in the Hole and it is such an easy quick meal to make, this is making me hungry...LOL. No-one ever notices when work is done around the house, but always quick on the mark to notice when something is'nt done...tut!

I hope you are keeping well...Best Wishes and Take Care!

Hi Jan...I've never heard of that recipe before.  I've heard of Yorkshire Pudding but have never had it.  I guess I don't get out much, huh? LOL!
You are so right on the housework!!  Although, when I was married, my hubby used to comment when the house was cleaned.  That was nice.
Enjoy your evening.

It's nice to see the old traditions being upheld. My dad in law always stopped and waited, in respect, if a funeral procession went by. If he was wearing a hat he'd always remove it. Doesn't take a lot but it means so much to those who are bereaved. B. x

That recipe does sound good ! Thank you for the explanation.   I'm eating a leftover sandwich and my son and his family have gone to visit some old friends this evening so the house is quiet once more.  They'll be home a little later, so I'm trying to catch up on e-mail and journals.  'On Ya' - ma

Hi Jan - your right about whipping air into the batter mixture.  My father was a yorkshireman and he taught me how to make a seriously good yorkshire pud!   What are you knitting now ?

Enjoy the evening.

I understand what you are saying about housework. We don't have that tradition here about closing the curtains when there is a death but it is a thoughtful one. I like that expression "beat it till it trots". lol Paula

It was interesting to read about the old traditions.  I had never heard of people doing that before.  Thanks for sharing.  Love the phrase "beat it til it trots" as well!
We love toad in the hole in this house!

Hi Jan,  I know that I've been here awhile now, as I knew immediately what Toad in a Hole was.  I've even made it several times.  Yum!  I would describe it as a big Yorkshire Pudding with a sausage in the middle.

I was unaware of the old tradition that you talked about.  How absolutely poignant.  In the states, it seems that we have a hard enough time just getting men to wear suites to a funeral, let alone stand outside a a house in morning in one!  I'll have to keep my eyes peeled for this now.  Thanks for sharing this.

Love,

Susie

Jan, I KNEW your American readers would be intrigued by toad in the hole.  I use a formula dating back to Philip Harben - remember him ?  Very early TV cook for those who don't.  1-3-5/EFM.  One egg, three ounces of flour, and five fluid ounces of milk (or milk and water mixed).  This has always worked for me, and it makes good pancakes too.  Bunny

i have never heard of closing your curtains and hadn't heard of your toad food either but it sounds good. I love to eat, lol.

Toad in the Hole Ah todays Entry Jan has made an old man happy. Now to convince my good lady wife.
As you say it is good to see some old traditions survive even covering moments of sadness.
I remember the old days when hats were removed etc as the funeral procession moved past. will these standards ever return I ask myself ?
Sorrowfully No.

Take Care
