Recycling is important to the future

This lovely Autumn scene is one of Donnas lovely designs ,Thankyou Donna ,she is 'So Clever'

Last Saturday when I went to the Tenants conferance I told you I would tell you what I learned,Of course some things may vary from county to county ,for instance the colour of the bins are sometimes different .

                                        PAPER CARD AND MAGAZINES.

Sent to the paper mill and shredded ,pulped and recycledback into paper.

Did you know?...Paper can be recycled up to six times before the tiny fibres it is made from get too short to hold it together.(this last is toilet roll and kitchen towel centre rolls )

PLASTIC BOTTLES.

Sent to a reprocessing plant and are washed, flaked, melted and remoulded into new products such as wheely bins and clothing.

Did you know ?...Duvet filling is made from plastic bottles...so every night when you go to sleep and pull your duvet cover over yourself ,you are really laying under plastic bottles ,and that your cosy fleece jacket  ,used to be a coke bottle !

TINS CANS AND AEROSOLS.

Washed smelted down and remoulded into cans  and aerosols.

Did you know ?...Every steel can is 100% recyclable. It can be recycled over and over again forever and can be used to make planes ,trains and cars

GARDEN WASTE

Sent to the local composting site and put into rows called windrows ,wherethe material breaks down naturally into compost.

Did you know ?...it only takes 14 weeks for your garden waste to turn into compost.

GLASS BOTTLES AND JARS

Washed ,broken up,melted and remoulded into more glass bottles and jars or alternatively broken down and used to build roads.

Did you know ?...recycling one glass bottle will save enough energy to power a TV for 20 minutes, and can be recycled and used as house insulation.

We were also given more saving tips ,ie buy products with less packaging, over 40% of the waste in our bins is retail packaging, use reusable shopping bags, instead of plastic carriers that take 500 years to degrade

I hope you have found this interesting ,I certainly did ..............just one thing! please dont ask about the 500 year old poly bags ,I dont know where  they are digging up the remains of these old Asda/Tesco bags ! ! !

                   Jan xx

Have a good Week End Everyone .....

Very interesting Jan! I recycle my paper and glass jars, it's rare that I buy tinned stuff though. When I buy my cats pouches I normally take them out of the cardboard packing, which is quite unnecessary and leave it in the supermarket for them to recycle. At work they don't recycle anything. They throw out all the cardboard boxes, of which we have a few hundred a week and all the glass jars straight into the normal bins. I've often wondered why they don't recycle it. Too much trouble I suppose. Other countries recycle a lot more than we do here. Your little flowering daisy tree is doing well and so are your busy lizzies, can't believe how many plants are still in flower here! Jeannette xx

Thanks Jan for a very interesting post.  They've been recycling where I come from in Canada for a very long time now and so it's always been quite natural to me.  Also as a prolific crafter and Sunday School teacher, those little bits and do dads (toilet paper rolls, light bulbs, egg cartons, etc.) always come in very handy!

Thanks for flagging this up, Jan. Hope they don't do a Germany somewhere, and collect the recyclables - only to dump everything together on the municipal dump

Great entry Jan, we do recycle everything that we can being so interested in the countryside I feel we should do our bit to try to help. At this time of year when the leaves fall off the trees and you can see through them I hate to see the polly bags hanging from the branches and they seem to stay forever getting more tattered with each strong wind.  Have a good weekend Love Joan.

I love fleece and wear lots of it...interesting that it comes from plastic.  We recycle bottles, cans and plastic containers here that are marked with a #1 or #2 on them.  We have to set them out with rubbish in a 'blue' plastic bag so they know it's the recyclables.  Very informative post for today - Thank you !

HI there,

I love to hear about people recycling my family and I have been doing it for many years now.

My latest project, when I had some old internal doors removed, is to split open the doors and use the outer parts to use as a insulating wall for my outside shed.

It is a little bit difficult to do the splitting but well worth it and, of course, it is costing me nothing.

John.

That was so interesting, Jan!  I feel bad because I always ask for Plastic bags when they bag my groceries at the supermarket.  I am going to ask for Paper bags from now on!

I learn so much when I come here and visit you! :)

Thank you Jan..

I found this very interesting. I save my aluminum cans for my neighbor who saves them to sell and I take my plastic bags back to Wal*Mart but I should be doing more. Thank you, Paula

For a moment up there you were starting to sound like Eddie Izzard in the public information ad. lol.

We recycle as much as we can, it makes sense, we can't carry on making so much rubbish. I just wish the supermarkets didn't feel it necessary to wrap everything, so much of the packaging in unnecessary.

Linda x.

PS Love the picture from Donna.

Jan I really found this entry so interesting ~ we have 3 different coloured wheelie bins ~ Brown ~ Black and Green ~ and if you put something in the wrong bin they won't empty it ~ makes you more aware of what to recycle ~ I have learned a lot from this entry ~ it amazed me the things they make out of our recycled waste ~ Ally x

I didn`t know exactly what happened to it all but thanks for explaining Jan.  Jim and I are into recycling and it`s nice to know we`re doing our bit for the planet.  I try to keep carbon emissions down by turning off lights etc.  The next generation deserve a decent environment to live in. :o)

Wish I could recycle more of my rubbish. The local council provide us with baskets and massive plastic boxes for recycling, instead of wheely bins. I can't lift those wretched baskets, when they're full of old newspapers, glass etc. and you have to put them out on the road verge for collection. We only have a general purpose wheely bin, hope our council soon wakes up to providing wheelies for recycling.
Your tub is lovely - I have found wild blue geraniums flowering locally, the seasons are getting all mixed up.
Take care. Really enjoyed this entry.

Thanks for making my recycling more interesting. Although I recycle I didn't realise what happened to all the different items once they had been collected. Have passed the information on and hope that it will make people more interested in starting to recycle. Love Pat.

I recycle those plastic bags around my house.... I put one in my waste basket and use all the small ones to clean up after my pets instead of buying them.... Its very interesting about all the ways the things are used.... I had to take a second look at my fleece shirt Im wearing today... Your planter is so beautiful. It would not be that pretty here as they are saying it will snow soon.... brrr. Sandra

For a very long time now i have never used plastic bags to put my fruit & veg in at the supermarket...Also as i've said before Tescos nicked my idea in encouraging customers to use their own containers for their shopping as i rarely use carrier bags...Actually bloke who owns corner shop was surprised the other week when i asked for one...Only reason was my hands were playing up so didn't want to drop everything...I use those fold up crates for my shopping and i have a cardboard box i got in asda about 6 years ago that i put all the juice bottles & cans in and other heavy stuff...Being in a victorian tenement we don't have wheelie bins we have on street bins instead...I got that 3 coloured cart thing from asda and we put all the recycling stuff in there...Then i take to nearest recycling bins place...The one thing i don't recycle is like veggie peelings etc as compost...The garden is postage stamp sized and there's nowhere am aware of that i can take them to be used as compost...We had a big compost heap in the garden when i was growing up and anything and everything got chucked on it...Mikeys SEN school has been working towards being accredited as a green school and this school year should see them achieving that :o) He's learnt a lot and is into recycling and am glad that one thing he has taken to heart is to switch of lights not being used cos that always gets my goat...Oh clothes i always put to charity shop or if unsuitable i do use as dusters and the like...Never actually bought a duster yet LOL   Caff xxxxxx

I found this fascinating.  We recycle all plastics, glass, paper and cans.  I never really knew all the different things they did with the stuff.  Glad to be able to help save the planet in a small way.  xx Chris

Great information and a good reminder to those of us who do recycle.  We have 3 trash bins here.  One for garbage, one for recycle items and one for garden waste.  It's great that our waste management is dealing with recycling.

I love recycling! LOL.I have a box for newspapers and take the bottles to the bottle bank. . the food scraps make great compost. My black bin is hardly ever full now so I hope I am doing my bit too.We need to. When you think we did more recycling in the old days. . pop bottles were taken back to the shop ,nothing was overwrapped like today, fish and chips came in newspaper till that was banned, lots of stuff went on the coal fires. All the fumes from central heating must be burning a huge hole in the ozone. . its worrying.

Very interesting Jan.  OMG I shall never be able to sleep the same under my duvet now I know what it is made off!  I also have a fleece jacket.  I am a walking land fill site lol

I am a recycling addict.  I will recycle anything.  Your cool facts make me feel like I am on the right track.  I use empty toilet paper rolls to plant seedlings in before taking them outside.  Just bung them in and forget about them.  The cardboard decomposes all on its own.  Thanks for this!  It was great!

Love,

Susie

Great entry.  Was miffed when our council decided to give us 3 wheelie bins instead of just one.  At the time it seemed like a big hassle having to separate all the rubbish, but it's really a great idea.....amazing the amount of stuff you gather up that can be recycled.
Hugs,
A xxx

Jan, if you ever get an invite to a recycling centre, can I come with you? I'm really into this and would love to see how they separate everything.
The green bin man will be wondering what's been going on this week as I'm taking down a long conifer hedge......=:-O

Recycling is definitely important. I'm lucky to have a really good recycling plant near me. The only trouble is that I'm falling over all the stuff I save up in bags in my spare room!
