Honey ,honey

Donna made this one for me ,isnt it great ? Thankyou so miuch Donna.

The life of a Honey Bee…

The meeting last Monday ,of the WI was as interesting as ever ,With Mr Arthur Golden telling us about the life of a Honey Bee, he had some slides to illustrate his talk ,There are 200 variety’s of Bee ,but just one that is able to store honey for instance the bumble bee isn’t!..Honey bees don’t hibernate and remain active throughout the winter; they will pollinate two feet from the hive, or two miles…there can be one queen per 20.000, and even up to 80.000, the life span of a queen can be five years, though is considered past her best after two years, the worker bees life span is six weeks, the bodies of whom are covered in hairs to catch the pollen ,where it is stored in wax cells when each cell is full a wax topping is secreted onto it to preserve the honey ,much like when we used to make jam ,a little wax paper was put on the top to ‘keep’ it ,did we learn that from the bees? Mr Golden asked us if we had ever sipped the honey from a cowslip, which of course many of us had.Mr Goldens talk was good but not quite as interesting as ‘Life on the Royal Yacht’, this isnt a critism I do admirethe committee, for the selection of speakers they arrange for us , next months speaker though does sound intriguing …Mrs Susannah Marshall, is coming to tell us about ‘Wickedly naughty women’, I am still being urged to join the Drama group, and they are to meet on March the 21st, at a member’s house, I couldn’t go last time as Aunty Kitty was taken so poorly, she is still far from her old cheeky self, I doubt now if she ever will be, old age can be so cruel. We went to see her yesterday and she barely knew us, or if she did she couldn’t bebothered, it is so sad………So every one have a good day With lots of love

Yum!  I lurve honey!
It's so true how the body fails us when we reach a certain age. I fear for my cat, Alfie, she is the same age as me  - in human years (65) and has many problems, she's off to the Vets this afternoon.
Lovely graphics again Jan :-D

One of my favorite topics is bees, hornets, wasps and ants.  I love the way they work in harmony.. each knowing exactly what they are to do.  I used to own an Ant Farm, and I had hours of fun watching them dig their tunnels, and take the dead to the 'graveyard' they had made a tunnell for.  Very interesting.  They had a nursery.. a graveyard...a conferance room.  Amazing.

Have a great day, Jan!

Love the guy's name, you can't get anything more Golden than honey, lol!!! I buy candles and have them as ornanments.....still have one (an owl) from my trip to Guernsey 29 years ago, lol, when I was very pregnant with Angela!!! I bought an identical one when Rob and I went back there 5 years ago....the original one is so much better and that was made of beeswax and it still looks good!

Well!  That was truly interesting.  I never knew about the bumblebees inability to store honey or that there were so many species either. As for not hibernating?  I wondered why those poor bees just sit there on the flowers in a torpor.  What a short life some have too! I've never sipped honey fro a cowslip.  I must try it this year.  Like the sound of next months speaker...can't wait!  Sorry to hear about your Aunt Kitty.  Its all of our worst fears when faculties go...isn't it? God Bless her.

The bees story was pretty interesting Jan.I do remember this though from reading it throughout my life at some time. The graphic very appropriate.I do not like honey personally, but my Aunt swore by it for good health. She always had it in her porridge and a teaspoon of brandy in her cup of tea each morning.Didn't do her any harm,She lived to be 93yrs old.I hope you consider the drama group if you feel you have the time.I think you would love it once you got into it.Hope you are well.I also hope Aunt Kitty picks up a little too.Take Care God Bless.

That is sad about Aunt Kitty :(  I can understand how you enjoyed the talk about the bees but it's not as interesting as Life on the Royal Yacht!!  I don't think I ever knew that honey bees don't hibernate that's why we see them about but think they shouldn't be there ~ interesting!!

Hey Jan, You are so right!  I WAS NOT getting any alerts from your journal, nor am I getting any from anyone else's!  Very annoying!  We used to have bees when we lived in that farm house on the Georgian Bay.  Very interesting creatures!
Have a wonderful weekend!

Jan, I wasn't receiving alerts from your journal. So sorry I'm behind.  I'm behind on the alerts I did receive.
Interesting about the bee....but the next one is one I'd fly to England to see!!  Hope you have fun with it.

Oh I have a passion for honey bees!  I am totally fascinated by them.  Talk about a totally female society, with males used only as sexual objects!  Whooo Hooo!  I've had a really hard time finding British honey here.  Almost everything comes from EU.  Bee's wax candles are the best for burning as they burn cleanly and give off a lovely "honey" fragrance!  Thanks for sharing this!

Very interesting about the honey bees.  I did learn some things I never knew.  Sad about your Aunt Kitty.  Old age is definitely very cruel.  It is so sad that she either didn't recognize you or just didn't have the energy to.  Love xx Chris  (No, I am not getting alerts, obviously..grrr.)
